So far their case has rested on accusations that Berlanty was residing in the West Bank illegally, and her deportation is part of a security campaign. Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev told CNN the treatment of Berlanty, who was detained for hours, blindfolded and handcuffed then dropped off at the Erez crossing and told to go home, was in keeping with Israeli concerns that Gaza-registered Palestinians may be coerced by family members to push forward Hamas-policy in the West Bank. " ¯It was not clear, however, whether the letter from Barghouthi was proclaiming as failed the most recent round of talks between Israel and Hamas via Germany over the possible release of 1,000 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the handing over of a captured Israeli soldier.
