Hamas hits the campaign trail despite renewed Israeli pressure

The many-sidedness of Hamas has rarely been on better display than in this town west of Ramallah. On Monday, the body of Sasson Nuriel, a kidnapped Israeli businessman, was dumped in Beitunya by the Hamas cell that had murdered him. A video of Mr Nuriel in captivity showed him mumbling in Arabic a request for the release of Palestinian prisoners. Yesterday, Sa'ad Chalabi, the Hamas supporter who is seeking the mayoralty of Beitunya, as leader of the local "Reform and Change" grouping, was out at the polling station doing some last-minute campaigning on a programme of better schools, improved sewage provision, and more strategic planning.

Waiting for freedom -- While Iran is being pressured to halt its nuclear weapon program, Israel’s nuclear weapon possession gets close to no attention at all. Though endagering his own freedom, Mordechai Vanunu felt he had an obligation to reveal that Israel possessed nuclear weapons two decades ago. For this he was abducted in Italy by Israeli Mossad agents, brought to Israel and sentenced to 18 years in prison for espionage and treason. Tommy Lapid, former-Israeli Minister of Justice, leader of the secular-centrist Shinui party, wanted him hanged....IMEMC correspondent Kristoffer Larsson interviewed Vanunu about his deed and his hopes for the future.
Aljazeera to appeal Alluni's conviction

Pan-Arab satellite channel Aljazeera has said it will appeal after a Spanish judge sentenced its correspondent Taysir Alluni to seven years in prison for collaborating with al-Qaida. "The verdict is very disappointing and we consider it unfair and we will contact immediately the legal defence team to study the possibilities of appealing it," Aljazeera general manager Waddah Khanfar said on Monday. The channel said it was an unjust sentence and a dangerous and unprecedented action in the history of journalism.
After five years, detainee hugs his ailing mother

Five years have passed since her son was arrested, the mother of detainee Ahmad Khalaf, was finally able to visit him, in spite of her sickness, and in spite of losing site in her right eye and week sight in the left, she managed to see him, even if he was like a shadow. The mother suffered a stroke and lost her site in the right eye, doctors warned her that any exhaustion and tiredness will sharply deteriorate her condition, which barred her from visiting him since the families of the detainees have to travel for several hours in a bus and wait for additional hours until they are allowed to visit their detained family members for some minutes.

Palestinian militant group Hamas has released a video of a bound and blindfolded Israeli businessman it says it kidnapped and later killed. The body of 51-year-old Sasson Nuriel, who vanished last week, was found near Ramallah in the West Bank on Monday. Hamas said it had planned to trade him for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, but decided to kill him after Israel began raids in the West Bank. Israel's Internal Minister Gideon Ezra called the killing "cowardly".

Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping and killing of a Jerusalem businessman who was found dead on Monday. The resistance fighters said in a statement that they had kidnapped 51-year-old Sasson Nuriel, whom they had identified as a Shin Bet security service agent, on Wednesday. They had intended to trade him for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. However, after Israel began a series of arrest raids against West Bank resistance fighters, they decided to kill him, the statement said on Tuesday.
