Report slams conditions at prisons, detention facilities

Public Defender''s Office says inadequate conditions are in violation of the law. -- A report by the Public Defender''s Office, submitted to Attorney General Meni Mazuz and to Internal Security Minister Tzachi Hanegbi, slams prison conditions across the country. According to the report, the inadequate prison conditions cause harm to prisoners'' health, undermine their dignity, and are in violation of the law.

Nasrallah: ''Mistake'' led to deaths of 3 IDF soldiers

The three Israel Defense Forces soldiers whose bodies were returned to Israel in January''s prisoner exchange were killed by "mistake," Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah said Thursday. Adi Avitan, Omar Suwad and Benny Avraham were kidnapped and killed by Hezbollah in October 2000, while patrolling along the Israeli-Lebanese border. But Nasrallah told Al Jazeera television Thursday that Hezbollah had intended to kidnap live Israeli soldiers.

Palestinian prisoners in Kadomim suffer worsening imprisonment conditions

Nablus - Palestinian prisoners in the infamous Zionist military jail of Kadomim to the southeast of Nablus city are complaining of worsening incarceration conditions. Lawyer Fayez Al-Zarba of the prisoners’ supporters society has quoted prisoners after visiting them that they were suffering from poor quantity and quality of meals.

Lawyer of the Palestinian Prisoners society, Raed Mhamid, who visited several detainees in Jalbo’ prison, said several rape attempts were conducted by Jailors against some detainees. Mhamid added that the detainees were placed in solitary after resisting and rejecting these attempts. Meanwhile, Mhamid added that the detainees whom he managed to meet informed him that the situation is boiling, and that the soldiers are forcing the detainees to strip in order to be searched, and that soldiers repeatedly ordered some prisoners to strip and placed them in a tight cell.

Syrian Police Disperse Protestors Demanding Release of Political Prisoners

Police have dispersed scores of protesters who had gathered for a sit-in at a main square to call for the release of political prisoners, human rights groups said. Eleven pro-democracy and human rights groups had called for the sit-in Monday to mark what they called "Syrian Political Prisoner Day." But police quickly surrounded Arnous Square and dispersed the congregating crowd. The protesters left peacefully.

   ...But in Gaza City, Hamas leader Abdel Aziz Rantisi spoke on Al-Jazeera after relieving his newest bodyguard of duty. Rantisi offered to give himself up to Israeli authorities at Erez if they promised to leave Hamas'' spiritual leader, Sheikh Yassin, alone. Rantisi now faces a life sentence in an Israeli prison close to Nes Tsiona. Family members might be allowed to visit him, we are told, but have been cautioned to purchase gas masks before entering any ward since prison guards, practicing state-of-the-art subduing techniques on their prisoners, routinely spray an agent similar to nerve-gas into the prison cells before beating up unrepentant convicts. [The Israeli Supreme Court recently ruled that these guards, however, must not kill any unconscious victims as that constituted cruel and unusual punishment inconsistent with the Jewish State''s humanitarian track record. Pundits in the US have uniformly lauded this case as yet another example of Israel''s moral and legal superiority over its Arab neighbors and even some western European nations.]....
