Ironies of History: Exodus and Gaza Aid Flotilla Palestine Chronicle: 30 May 2010 - Richard Irvine - Belfast No one can accuse History of not having a sense of irony. Sixty-three years ago in July 1947 a passenger ship destined for Palestine and named The Exodus was stopped and boarded by the British Navy. The ship was crowded with Holocaust survivors determined to make a new life for themselves in British controlled Palestine. The British, facing Jewish terrorism and trying to keep promises made to the Palestinian Arabs to limit Jewish immigration, were determined to stop it. Accordingly when the Royal Navy boarded the ship twenty miles out from Haifa a full scale battle ensued. Three of the immigrants were killed and dozens injured as British troops beat the passengers on to three separate prison ships. Lawyers say spying confession inadmissible Jonathan Cook, Maan News Agency 5/28/2010 Nazareth - A leading human rights activist from Israel’s Palestinian Arab minority was charged yesterday with the most serious security offenses on Israel’s statute book, including espionage. Prosecutors indicted Ameer Makhoul, the head of Ittijah, an umbrella organization for Arab human rights groups in Israel, with spying on security facilities on behalf of Hizbullah after an alleged meeting with one of its agents in Denmark in 2008. Makhoul, who had been held incommunicado by Israel’s secret police, the Shin Bet, for much of the time since his arrest three weeks ago, appeared in court and pleaded not guilty. In his first public statement, he told the court: “The Shin Bet controls the Israeli justice system.” As a gag order was lifted on the case, his lawyers said Makhoul had been tortured during his detention, including being told by interrogators that they would leave him “disabled.” The three lawyers said he had been forced to make a false confession, which they would argue was inadmissible. Makhoul’s arrest had angered many in Israel’s Palestinian minority, nearly a fifth of the population, who suspect he is being persecuted for his leading role in promoting internationally the boycott movement against Israel and his prominent opposition to Israel’s attack on Gaza nearly 18 months ago. He has been backed by human rights groups abroad, including Amnesty International, which declared him a prisoner of conscience and accused Israel of “pure harassment.” Makhoul’s brother, Issam, a former MP for a joint Jewish-Arab party, told Israel Radio yesterday that Mr Makhoul had been threatened by the Shin Bet back in January 2009, shortly after he organized protests against the Gaza attack.... more.. e-mail Israeli Human Rights Activist: I Was Tortured Palestine Chronicle: 28 May 2010 - By Jonathan Cook - Nazareth A leading human rights activist from Israel's Palestinian Arab minority was charged yesterday with the most serious security offences on Israel’s statute book, including espionage. Tribute to the people of Gaza Mairead Maguire, International Solidarity Movement 5/27/2010 I never cease to be amazed at the power of the human spirit to survive. During my last visit to Gaza in October 2008 I was amazed and deeply moved by the power of the people I witnessed. In a triumph of hope over adversity and tremendous suffering, love still abides. Gaza comprises a small strip of land 27 miles long and 6 miles wide. This coastal strip is bordered by Israel on the one side, the Mediterranean Sea on the other and to a lesser extent by Egypt at the southern end. With one and a half million inhabitants Gaza is the fifth most densely populated place on the planet, 50% of which are under the age of 18. Two thirds of the total population hold refugees status, and comprise the victims and their descendants of previous acts of Israeli aggression. Gaza’s people have suffered an Israeli occupation for over 40 years and even though Israel withdrew from Gaza in August 2005 it has continued to control every aspect of life in the tiny coastal strip. Hamas was democratically elected to power in the 2006 Palestinian elections and has governed the Gaza strip since the summer of 2007. It was at this time in 2007 that Israel commenced its devastating blockade of the strip. Essentially the blockade represents a draconian policy by Israel. A minimum amount of basic subsistence goods are allowed to enter the strip with the intention of holding a malnourished population just short of outright starvation. Coupled to the severe food shortages are the restrictions / ban on basic essentials such a medicine and desperately needed reconstruction materials. This blockade constitutes “Collective Punishment” of a civilian population an act illegal under Article 33 of the fourth Geneva Convention. But the Culture of Impunity, under which Israel operates, means Israel continues to ignore International Law with many of the World’s Governments and international bodies’ remaining silent. In the words of one Israeli professor, Israel has made Gaza into the largest open air prison in the world. Whether by land, sea or air the one and a half million inhabitants of Gaza are trapped.... more.. e-mail Palestinian Political Prisoner Ameer Makhoul: “I reject all allegations against me” Alternative Information Center 1 - “This legal proceeding is invalid and I reject all the allegations against me.” So stated Ameer Makhoul to reporters outside a Haifa courthouse in response to the indictment filed against him on 27 May for espionage, assisting an enemy at a time of war and maintaining... Even picnics in Israel are political Neve Gordon, Redress 5/26/2010 Our farewell picnic to Ezra Nawi before his prison term for peaceful protest carried a new message to most Israeli picnics. Picnics, like almost everything else in Israel, are often political. Oz Shelach underlines this point in his collection of short stories Picnic Grounds, where he describes how a history professor takes his family on a picnic in the pine forest near Givat Shaul, a Jerusalem neighborhood. The professor teaches his son some of the camping skills he learned while serving in the Israeli military, using old stones to block the wind and to protect the newly-lit fire. The stones, we are told, are the remains of a village known as Deir Yassin. Although Shelach does not say as much, Deir Yassin was a Palestinian village located on the outskirts of Jerusalem. The Jewish neighborhood, which now stands in its place, was built not long after Israeli paramilitary forces evicted its Palestinian residents, while massacring an estimated 100 men, women and children out of a total population of 600. Shelach does not recount this history; he simply describes how the father builds a fire with his son and then ends the story by noting that the history professor “imagined that he and his family were having a picnic, unrelated to the village, enjoying its grounds, outside history”. Many picnics in Israel take place in pine forests that were planted to cover the remains of hundreds of Palestinian villages destroyed in 1948. Wittingly or unwittingly, these gatherings have a political effect, since the people enjoying their leisure time on these sites reenact the historical suppression of the Palestinian Nakba. This past Saturday [22 May] I also went on a picnic with my family, but in stark opposition to most Israeli picnics it tried to enact a remembering by exposing the continued domination and expulsion of Palestinians. We joined a group of Jews and Palestinians from Ta’ayush in the South Hebron desert to break bread together and bid farewell to Ezra Nawi, who the following day began serving a jail sentence for resisting Israel’s occupation. more.. e-mail Israel releases 3 detainees 5/24/2010 - Nablus - Ma'an - Israeli authorities released three Palestinian detainees from the Beit Furik village, east of Nablus city, after four years of detention on Sunday. Palestinian nonviolence relies on global non-silence Yousef Munayyer, Jerusalem Fund for Education and Community Development 5/23/2010 When will there be a Palestinian Gandhi? I’m often asked this question by people who sympathise with Palestinian suffering but are uncomfortable associating themselves with resistance movements that they see as violent or terrorist. The reality of course is that Palestinian nonviolent resisters are not only active today but have a long and storied history in the Palestinian struggle. The real question is: why haven’t we heard about them? Like many resisting oppression, Palestinian Gandhis are likely to be found in prisons after being repressed by Israeli soldiers or police or in the hospital after being brutally beaten or worse. In recent years, the Israeli repression of Palestinian nonviolent dissent has increased significantly and Israel is showing signs of transforming into a fully-fledged police state. Even Israeli citizens, both Palestinian such as Ameer Makhoul and Jewish, have faced intimidation in one form or another for being critical of Israel’s policies. Surely, Israel has realised that its ongoing occupation, continued colonisation of Palestinian land, and its bombardment of civilian-packed Gaza have significantly and negatively impacted on its image abroad. The images of nonviolent Palestinian protests against the Israeli occupation aren’t helping Israel’s reputation either. Perhaps that is why recently many nonviolent activists and initiatives have been shut down and repressed. Jamal Juma, Muhammad Othman and Abdallah Abu Rahman may not be household names like Gandhi or Mandela but they have been just as consistent in resisting Israel’s illegal segregation wall in the West Bank by organising nonviolent demonstrations for years. And, like Gandhi and Mandela they have paid a price by being arrested on multiple occasions. The Israeli repression efforts extend far beyond the arrests of nonviolent demonstrators against the wall.... -- See also: Source: The Guardian more.. e-mail IOA decided to exile MP Abu Tair from Jerusalem Uruknet May 21, 2010 - The Israeli occupation authority has decided Thursday to exile Palestinian Jerusalemite lawmaker MP Mohammed Abu Tair from the occupied city forever, just hours after they released him from jail where he was arbitrarily detained for 43 months. IOA banishes two brothers from Beer Sheba to Gaza PIC 22 May 2010 - The Israeli occupation authority (IOA) has banished two Palestinian brothers from Beer Sheba to the Gaza Strip on Friday afternoon, Wa'ed society for prisoners said in a statement. Farwana: 13 Palestinian lawmakers remain in Israeli jails PIC 22 May 2010 - Abdul Naser Farwana, a Palestinian researcher in prisoners' affairs, said on Friday that there are 13 Palestinian lawmakers still incarcerated in Israeli jails without any justified legal reason. Israel’s navy will have its work cut out Jamal Elshayyal, Palestine Note 5/22/2010 Ten thousand tons of cargo, 800 passengers, 50 nationalities, nine vessels - one aim - to break the siege on Gaza. That’s the simple math behind the Freedom Flotilla as its lead vessel was unveiled on Saturday in Istanbul. At a rally held to bid the ship farewell, organisers challenged Israel’s insistence that its navy would not allow this convoy, of much needed humanitarian aid, to reach the Gaza Strip. As one organiser put it to me: "These ships will only return empty of their cargo, and with the footprints from Gaza’s sand". And from what I’ve seen from the organisers and supporters, I am inclined to believe her. There are more than 20 charities partaking in one way or another in this flotilla -activists, humanitarians, politicians from the USA to Indonesia. If Israel were to prevent these people from entering or if it were to harm or detain them, Israeli authorities could very well find themselves embroiled in diplomatic disputes with up to 50 countries. Furthermore, the sheer resolve and work put in by the organisers of this fleet - over a period spanning back to 2008 - really does make it difficult to believe that they would just turn back to where they came from without reaching their desired destination. Aside from the 10,000 tons of aid, organisers say they’re taking up to two months worth of food and supplies - in case that’s how long it takes for Israel to allow them access. That’s 800 people, willing to spend two months at sea, away from their friends, families, and livelihood, so they can deliver aid to people they don’t even know. From Israel’s perspective though, it is understandable why it shouldn’t allow this humanitarian convoy reach Gaza. Doing so could dramatically change the status quo.... -- See also: Source more.. e-mail Gaza group reports 2 more deported by Israel 5/21/2010 - Gaza - Ma'an - Brothers born in Gaza, one married to a Palestinian citizen of Israel, were detained and deported to the Gaza Strip on Friday, officials at the Wa'ed Society in Gaza said. As the 62nd anniversary of the expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their homes looms, rights continue to be violated and a solution is more urgent than ever. A solution based on UN General Assembly Resolution 194 for Palestinian refugees is a must. The creation of a Palestinian state on the 1967 border, with East Jerusalem as its capital, is a must. Releasing all Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails is a must. Solving all permanent-status issues is a must. The international community must draw important lessons from the Nakba and make of this anniversary a date when the world upholds international law. No state is above the law, and the international community must end Israeli belligerence and disregard for international law. Sixty-two years ago tomorrow, more than 726,000 Palestinians were forcibly displaced from their homes and lands to make way for the State of Israel. They have been prevented from returning ever since. Hundreds of Palestinian villages and neighborhoods were destroyed. Today, over seven million Palestinian refugees live in exile. Of those, more than 1.3 million Palestinians continue to live in 58 UN-administered refugee camps. In other conflicts, refugee rights have been honored and respected, including the right of return, restitution and compensation. In stark contrast, however, Israel refuses to even recognize the Palestinian right of return, thus continuing to deny the refugees’ basic rights. The Palestinian Nakba continues to this day, as Israeli practices and policies of evictions, home demolitions, deportations, settlement activities, wall-building as well as closure and siege in both the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip generate new waves of displaced persons. more.. e-mail Mustafa Barghouthi Condemns Banning Of Chomsky From WB Palestine Monitor - MP Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi, Secretary General of the Palestinian National Initiative denounced the refusal of permitting entrance to the American intellectual Professor Noam Chomsky from entering the Palestinian territories. The savior in each of us Mazin Qumsiyeh, PhD, Qumsiyeh: A Human Rights Web 5/5/2010 We live in an era of psychological warfare and mass hysteria generated by mass communication that already led us to the catastrophic first and second world wars. And after the US dropped nuclear bombs on civilian cities in Japan, all gloves were off instead of people being horrified enough to forsake war all together. Over 100 major conflicts in the last 60 years costing tens of millions of lives. It is even getting worse as wars are started by a few special interest groups, a few rich media owners can push for them, and a few soldiers can execute them via remote control and pilot-less planes that butcher thousands at the push of a button. The maddening era where sanctions on Iraq were introduced to satisfy a special lobby caused the death of over a million Iraqi civilians and then a war and occupation in which a million more have been killed. Many claim a clash of religions or of ‘civilizations’ to justify these abominations when excess greed can explain it better. But humans also fail to learn the lessons of history or to reexamine our own dogmatic beliefs that allow greedy people to exploit us and take us into wars in the name of ‘nation’ or ‘religion’ or ‘ideology’. Here in Palestine, at every turn we are inundated with messages about conflicting religious and/or political beliefs; group think that seems hard to dispel. When religion enters into it, it becomes extremely volatile. By religion, I do not mean the original teachings of the prophets, but that which has been hijacked by the greedy for profits. Mohammed and Jesus had far simpler messages of truth mostly dealing with personal behavior towards God and the needy people in society. Here in these hills of Palestine Jesus told the truth to the many different groups of people that inhabited this multi-ethnic and multi-religious society. His message of reform and logic was not directed only to the tribalistic Hebrew Judeans but to all people. Some rejected the message precisely because they could not claim it for their tribe or advance their social status using the message. He spoke plainly to both tribalistic Judeans who believed that they are better than the goyim and to the Roman officials who believed they were civilized superior democrats. He spoke to Idumeans, Jebusites, Hebrews, Ammonites, Samaritans, and others and taught that all are equal before God.... -- See also: Former Yale professor among 4 detained in Walaja more.. e-mail 1 hurt, 6 detained at West Bank rally 5/7/2010 - Ramallah - Ma'an - One Palestinian was injured and six others were detained amid clashes in the Bil'in village west of Ramallah on Friday. Not Much Time Remains for Israel - A Film Review Palestine Chronicle: 6 May 2010 - By Gilad Atzmon – London The London Palestinian Film Festival opened this year with Elia Suleiman's latest feature 'The Time that Remains' (105min), a monumental reflective and poetic take on Palestine since 1948. To a certain extent Suleiman’s latest film reminded me of Ramzy Baroud’s book My Father Was a Freedom Fighter. Both works chart a personal and devastating expedition into hopelessness. Both accounts are saturated with repeated failures and betrayals, both Baroud and Suleiman are courageous enough to criticise their collective narrative and yet, both pepper their story with some staggering wit, hope and humour. They make you smile just when you are about to sob. (Click here to watch a trailer of the film.) Like Baroud, Suleiman juxtaposes the Palestinian journey from heaven to hell with the Zionist phantasmic counter move from ‘hell’ to ‘heaven’. The devastating images of Palestinian torture and dispossession are scattered with scenes of...more Israeli Troops Detain 12 Palestinian Civilians During Morning Invasions IMEMC - 5 May 2010 - At least 12 Palestinian civilians were detained by Israeli soldiers during morning military invasions targeting a number of West Bank communities on Wednesday. It "advocates for all persons" in Israel and Occupied Palestine to protect them from abusive treatment of all kinds. In June 2008, its report titled, "No Defense: Soldier Violence against Palestinian Detainees" is just as relevant today, perhaps more so given Israel's intensified violence and abuse in Gaza and the West Bank in the past year. PACTI interviewed detainees and participating soldiers, included media reports, IDF provided information, and comments of political figures regarding these practices. Observed was a phenomenon dating back decades, and, of course, remains ongoing today. Hence, the report's relevance and need to discuss it. The act showed the extent of "extremism, religious hatred and racism in Israel," the sheikh said in a statement. He said it was not the first occasion during which "Israeli forces have disrespected the Noble Qur'an, having done so in the Al-Arroub refugee camp and in Megiddo prison," and that the Qur'an should be respect by all religions "but Israeli guards do not do so."
