Plan: imprison undocumented migrant workers in military camps

The police force is examining the possibility of converting Israeli military camps in the centre of the country to detention camps for undocumented migrant workers, or to place the workers in hotels. This information reached 'Yedioth Ahronot' from the police's Division for the Deportation of Illegal Workers. Intensive preparatory work is being  conducted within this division, which was set up under Commander Yaakov Ganot. The primary difficulty facing the police is locating places in which to hold the thousands of illegal workers who will be detained when this inter-office department commences its work.

Sharon to inaugurate 'Zeevi promenade' tens of metres from Al-Haram al-Sharif

Israel set to lose $200 million in aid from U.S.

Refugees begin hunger strike in Jerusalem as Israel violates its international commitments

A group of 20 recognized refugees started a hunger-strike yesterday (12 August) in Jerusalem, demanding that Israel grant them rights according to the 1951 U.N Convention and the 1967 Protocol relating the Status of Refugees (“the Convention”). Women with young babies and elderly people are standing in the punishing Jerusalem heat demanding to be heard. This morning, one of the strikers, an elderly man with heart problems, was rushed to the hospital.

Yesterday, Adalah sent a letter to Attorney General Elyakim Rubenstein seeking the cancellation of a decision by the Registrar of Associations ("Registrar") to appoint an investigator into Adalah's activities and calling for the opening of an investigation into the Registrar's actions. Adalah learned solely from journalists and media reports that the Registrar intends to investigate the organization on the grounds of undertaking activities beyond the scope of its mandate; affiliation with a political party; and financial mismanagement. Adalah adamantly denies these allegations and maintains that the organization is managed professionally, in accordance with the law.

Death toll in Hebrew University bombing rises to nine

The death toll in the bombing at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem on Mt. Scopus rose to nine overnight Monday with Revital Barashi, 30, succumbing to injuries she sustained in the attack.

Barghouti to be indicted Wed. for 'incitement to murder'

The Justice Ministry said on Tuesday it would indict jailed Tanzim chief Marwan Barghouti, on charges linked to militant violence including "incitement to murder."  Barghouti, general secretary of Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement in the West Bank, has been in detention since the IDF arrested him on April 15.

Sharon to Knesset panel: Iraq is our greatest threat

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Monday that Iraq "is the greatest danger facing Israel."
Asked by Labor Party MK Ophir Pines-Paz and Shas MK Yitzhak Cohen if Israel plans to attack Iraq if Baghdad attacks Israel, Sharon said that "we don't know for certain if the U.S. will attack Iraq. Iraq is a great danger. It could be said it is the greatest danger. We aren't intervening in U.S. decisions." But he said that "strategic coordination between Israel and the U.S. has reached unprecedented dimensions."

Groups reject proposal to cease attacks within Israel: JERUSALEM — A broad range of Palestinian groups meeting in Gaza City on Monday pledged to continue their uprising against Israel and rejected a proposed halt to bombings and other attacks inside Israel's borders. The decision dashed earlier hopes that the Palestinian groups, including the radical Hamas movement, might take a stand against attacks on Israeli civilians.
