Annapolis and the coalition / Should they stay or go? Yossi Verter, Ha’aretz 11/28/2007 In the tumult of the cameras snapping photographs, one picture caught President Bush sitting with Condoleezza Rice and Ehud Barak. Bush and Barak are sharing a joke. This is the same Barak who has committed "to end the partnership with Olmert" when the complete Winograd report on last year’s Lebanon war comes out in a few weeks. Such a move will end the negotiations with the Palestinians, and early elections will see the right come to power, the polls say. After yesterday, it’s hard to imagine Barak fulfilling his promise. It’s hard to imagine him acting against his constituency, who support Ehud Olmert and the peace process, especially after they heard the prime minister make a speech that even Shimon Peres would be proud of, a speech worthy of "the head of the peace camp." It’s hard to imagine Barak clashing with the U.S. administration, which may be a lame duck, but you never know. BEIRUT, Nov 27(IPS) - On the edge of Beirut’s suburbs lies Bourj al-Barajneh, a Palestinian enclave located at the heart of a Shiite neighbourhood, traditionally the domain of Iran-backed Hezbollah. Here, 17,000 Palestinian refugees are amassed on a minuscule swath of land, co-existing in a fragile truce among run-down buildings and muddy streets. As a persistent political deadlock looms over Lebanon and presidential elections run beyond time limits imposed by the constitution, tensions are rising in Lebanon’s many Palestinian camps, home to more than 400,000 refugees. On Nov. 16, exactly a week before the elections deadline -- now postponed to Nov. 30 -- screams filled the narrow alleys of Bourj al-Barajneh as shots fired by gunmen ripped the air, leaving three people injured. Israeli sources: Egyptian police found explosive materials near Gaza-Egypt border Ghassan Bannoura - IMEMC News, International Middle East Media Center 11/22/2007 Israeli sources reported that Egyptian police found explosive materials near a school in the town of Al Arish on the Gaza-Egypt borders on Thursday. According to the sources, the Egyptian police found a ton of explosives in an underground cave while searching for smuggling tunnels used by the Palestinian resistance to get weapons and food supplies into the coastal region. This latest discovery was made public less than two days after the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak told the Israeli Premier Ehud Olmert that Egypt is doing its best to stop the resistance from smuggling weapons into Gaza via Egypt using underground tunnels. The American and Israeli administrations have put severe pressure on the Egyptian regime to stop the weapon smuggling on the Egypt-Gaza border. The Israeli army that is surrounding the Gaza strip has imposed a total siege on Gaza shortly after Hamas took power in the 2006 Palestinian elections. American Peace activist holds hunger strike Maisa Abu Ghazaleh - IMEMC News, International Middle East Media Center 11/19/2007 Allene Rusers, a seventy-one year old American Peace activist, on Monday announced that she intended to go on hunger strike for the next two weeks in protest against infighting amongst the Palestinian people and the continued occupation of the Palestinian territories. Of the ongoing crisis in the Gaza Strip, Rusers expressed her concern for residents of the region, calling on the Hamas movement to relinquish control in Gaza, and warning that the region was facing an Israeli attack in which only the civilian population would be harmed. Despite calling for Hamas to relinquish control, the woman acknowledged that the movement had won fair, free, and democratic elections and criticized the negative media coverage of the organization. Speaking on the subject of the future status of |Jerusalem, Rusers acknowledge that the city held special significance for all and, as such, should be jointly controlled by Islamic, Christian and Jewish religious figures. Haniyeh: Abbas is preventing national dialogue PNN - IMEMC News, International Middle East Media Center 11/12/2007 Ismail Haniyeh, the deposed Palestinian Prime Minister, on Monday stated that the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is rendering national dialogue practically impossible by placing unrealistic demands on the Hamas movement. Haniyeh stated that the only way out of the internal Palestinian crisis would be a national agreement, based on comprehensive national talks between the Fatah and Hamas parties, adding that while Hamas was ready for talks, President Abbas remained unwilling. Haniyeh added that the Hamas party has, throughout its time in office - after winning legislative elections in January 2006 - been extremely willing to consider all initiatives for national dialogue and unity, be they Arab, Palestinian or European initiatives, but such moves have been rejected by Fatah and the Palestinian Authority. Haniyeh reiterated earlier statements that the Hamas party had no intention Nasrallah backs early polls to defuse presidential crisis The whole world' cannot disarm resistance - and cabinet is 'a, Daily Star 11/12/2007 BEIRUT: Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah cast a broad net on Sunday, vowing that no one could disarm his Hizbullah resistance fighters, recommending early parliamentary elections as a remedy to the standoff over Lebanon’s presidency, and warning that recent Israeli military exercises were preparation for a new conflict. Nasrallah also reached out to Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, many of whom live in camps near neighborhoods known as hotbeds of Hizbullah support, and voiced opposition to the government’s plans to privatize the country’s two mobile-phone networks. In a televised address to a crowded Hizbullah rally in commemoration of Martyrs Day, Nasrallah promised that no power could force his group to give up its arms. "If the whole world came and tried, it wouldn’t be capable of implementing the clause concerning... Mizhir: US & Israeli conference-expectations contradictory to Palestinian interests IMEMC Staff, International Middle East Media Center 11/9/2007 Jamil MIzhir, member of the Central Committee of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), on Thursday stated that U.S. and Israeli expectations fro the upcoming conference stand in direct contradiction to Palestinian interests. In a political seminar organized by Hamas media office in the Gaza Strip, Mizhir stated that the American administration wishes to cover its failures in Afghanistan and Iraq in order to improve its image before nationwide elections. He added that the US administration is attempting to improve public support for President George Bush by imposing pro-Israeli solutions on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, without paying attention to the legitimate rights of Palestinians. Mizhir also warned that Israel’s main goal was further normalization with the Arab world without fully resolving the conflict, adding his belief that Israeli forces will never voluntarily withdraw from
Articulating the Unprintable: Ramzy Baroud Discusses Media Response to His Book Ramzy Baroudinterviewed byJune Rugh, ZNet 11/15/2007 Ramzy Baroud, veteran Palestinian-American journalist and Editor-in-Chief of the Palestine Chronicle, recently completed a speaking tour of the United States’ East Coast to promote his second book, The Second Palestinian Intifada: A Chronicle of a People’s Struggle (Pluto Press, 2006). The Second Palestinian Intifada is a far-reaching account of key events of the past five years that transformed the political landscape not only of Palestine and Israel, but of the entire Middle East. With a critical eye, Baroud takes the most controversial issues head-on: the alarming escalation in suicide bombings, the construction of the Separation Wall, the devastating hunger and unemployment in the Occupied Territories, the brutality of the Israeli army, the political surprise of the Palestinian elections. Peace and Democracy in Palestine Ramzy Baroud, MIFTAH 11/12/2007 After years of marked absence, the Bush administration has finally decided to upgrade its involvement in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The announcement of a Middle East peace conference in Annapolis, Maryland has raised red flags for anyone who has learned from past experience how unbalanced and insincere peace efforts actually can lead to further violence. And it requires little cynicism to ponder how genuine these current efforts are. It has been suggested that President Bush — whose actions have thus defined his legacy as that of a war president — wishes to leave on a more positive note. We heard the same argument in mid 2000 when President Bill Clinton facilitated ill-prepared talks, the failure of which sparked tension and violence, which were of course blamed solely on Palestinians. Others argue that the conference is motivated not by a desire for lasting peace, but by the wish to further isolate Hamas – the party that was democratically elected by a decisive majority in the Occupied Territories’ legislative elections in January 2006.
