3/30/2010 - Bethlehem - Ma'an - The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics issued a statement Tuesday to mark Land Day, estimating that more than 85% of Palestinian land remains under Israeli control, with 55% of settlers in the West Bank centered in the Jerusalem governorate. According to 2008 data, the number of outposts, settlements and military bases in the West Bank totaled 440 with the highest number of settlers in Jerusalem, the PCBS wrote. 3/30/2010 - Ramallah - Ma'an - An event marking Palestinian Land Day in Budrus village was suppressed by Israeli forces on Tuesday, with reports of several injured by tear gas and rubber bullets. Na'im Marar,charged with monitoring the progress of Israel's separation wall in the west-of-Ramallah area, said locals and activists gathered in the village after the noon prayer and walked toward lands on the far side of the separation wall. Participants were set to plant trees in the area, Marar said. Among those injured was Tawfiq At-Tirawi, member of the Fatah Central Committee, who attended the event alongside his Central Committee colleague Jamal Muheisin, former Nablus governor. According to Marar, At-Tirawi was hit with a rubber-coated bullet, adding that Palestine TV reporter Harun Amayra sustained injuries to his leg from the fire.
Zaki asked to agree on restricted movement
3/30/2010 - Bethlehem - Ma'an - Fatah Central Committee member Abbas Zaki, detained with 10 other Palestinians in the Ofer detention center, was asked to sign a deal restricting his movement by Israeli authorities. Zaki was detained during a Palm Sunday rally, protesting Israeli restrictions placed upon Palestinian access to Jerusalem over Easter and general access to religious sites in the occupied city. Fellow Central Committee Nabil Sha'ath said Zaki refused to sign the deal put forward to him by Israeli authorities, which include a fine, compliance with requests made by the Israeli intelligence services, and restriction on travel and movement throughout the occupied Palestinian territories. Factional representatives at the detention center greeted Zaki, who was originally transferred to the Russian interrogation center in Jerusalem, and wished him a short stay in the prison.
Land Day in Gaza: Six marches, dozens injured
3/30/2010 - Gaza - Ma'an - Men and women from Gaza marched toward the Israeli-imposed buffer-zone on Monday, marking Land Day and the effective confiscation of 20% of arable land in Gaza. Locals said dozens of Palestinians sustained injuries when Israeli forces opened fire on marches across Gaza, as Palestinians continued to challenge the restricted access to agricultural land. Marches beginning as early as December increased in frequency over the last month, culminating in a wide-scale event marking the 34th anniversary of Land Day in which six Palestinians with Israeli citizenship were killed by Israeli forces during demonstrations protesting land confiscation. During the commemoration, where Palestinians again protested land confiscations, witnesses said Israeli troops opened fire directly at protesters east of Khan Younis and the Al-Maghazi refugee camp in southern Gaza.
Gaza: Child killed by disputed fire
3/30/2010 - Gaza - Ma'an - A child was shot and killed east of the Yasser Arafat International Airport in Rafah on Tuesday, medics said. Muawiya Hassanein, director of ambulance and emergency services in Gaza, said Muhammad Zen Ismail Al-Farmawi, 15, was shot dead near the southeasterly border by Israeli forces, while local sources who wished to remain anonymous said the death may have been an internal matter. Hassanein said ambulances had been unable to retrieve the body because of ongoing clashes in the area, while an Israeli military spokesman said he had no knowledge of the incident. The airport and surrounding area was the target of several Israeli airstrikes over recent weeks. The airport was destroyed in 2002 by Israeli strikes and has remained nonoperational. The death came amidst six separate Land Day rallies across the Gaza Strip, with residents and internationals marching toward the Israeli-imposed. . .

Members condemned the detention of Fatah Central Committee member Abbas Zaki, who was detained on Palm Sunday by Israeli forces for participating in a rally denouncing Israeli policy preventing Palestinian access to holy sites in Jerusalem over Easter. The detention of a high-ranking Palestinian official during peace time by Israel is the first of its kind, following the ratification of the Oslo Accords in 1993. The Fatah officials said Israeli "aggression" against the movement did not deter the backbone of Fatah and their commitment to non-violent resistance, and the establishment of a Palestinian state on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

3/30/2010 - Jerusalem - Ma'an - Israeli forces removed a banner at the entrance of the An-Nabi Samuel village in Jerusalem, which defined the area as a Palestinian village of Jerusalem. The banner was erected by the Palestinian Youth Union under a project seeking to place similar signposts around Palestinian villages in and around Jerusalem. Mahram Al-Barghouti, general director of the Palestinian Youth Union, said that the removal of the sign was an attempt to "wipe out Palestinian heritage and history of Palestinian villages, especially in An-Nabi Samuel, which is under fierce attacks including racism, restrictions, and the banning of construction." Al-Barghouti added that residents are not allowed to enter the village without showing their ID card to Israeli forces. CPT report corroborates family account of child arrest
3/30/2010 - Bethlehem - Ma'an - A report from Christian Peacemaker Teams in Hebron confirmed reports of the detention of a 13-year-old girl by Israeli forces last week. At the time, an Israeli military spokesman said he had no knowledge of the incident, which was left uncorroborated until a CPT report was released on Thursday. According to the report, "At about 5:45pm , CPTers followed four soldiers as they entered the girl's home and ordered the entire family to the roof. Once on the roof, a fifth soldier from a permanent post on a neighboring Israeli settler home ordered the family's three teenage daughters to one side of the roof." The soldier singled out the 13-year-old and accused her of throwing a stone. The girl's mother protested saying that minutes before she had notified this soldier of settlers throwing stones at her as she hung her laundry and that he had seen settlers throwing stones. . . . the soldier's response was to call another unit of soldiers to detain her daughter.

3/30/2010 - Jonathan Cook - Ma'an - Haifa - A Palestinian-owned restaurant in the Israeli city of Haifa has was caught in a whirlwind of legal action and threats of violence after staff refused to serve a soldier in uniform, an incident that rapidly smudged the city's reputation as a model of good Jewish-Palestinian relations. The soldier, Raviv Roth, launched a damages claim for 16,000 US dolalrs over his treatment at Azad, a restaurant located in a bohemian neighborhood of the northern port city. Roth's lawyer alleged that the restaurant broke anti-discrimination laws and humiliated the soldier, while Azad's owner says he only wanted to ensure a relaxed and non-partisan atmosphere for all his customers. Since the incident occurred lin late February, soldiers and right-wing students staged a large demonstration outside Azad demanding a boycott of the restaurant, and Azad's staff have received dozens of calls threatening to kill them or burn the premises down.
Bethlehem journalists strike over PA use of force at rally
3/30/2010 - Bethlehem - Ma'an - Palestinian journalists in Bethlehem will strike Tuesday, in response to Palestinian Authority security forces' decision to prevent press from covering protests in the city a day earlier. A statement released by participating journalists said the protest wouldbegin in front of the Bethlehem government headquarters at 10am, which would be followed by a meeting with the governor, Abdul Fattah Hamayil, who was present at Monday's rally. At the meeting, reporters will officially hand over a letter to the PA demanding that those security officers suspected of assaulting journalists be reprimanded. If the PA fails to respond to the letter, journalists say they will boycott all Palestinian official visits in Bethlehem during Easter, particularly that of Prime Minister Salam Fayyad. Abdul Nasser An-Najjar, head of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, told Ma'an that he and the body's secretary-general fully support the protest.
Nablus merchant kidnapped, attacked by gunmen
3/30/2010 - Nablus - Ma'an - Unidentified gunmen kidnapped a merchant from his home in Nablus shortly after midnight on Tuesday and later released him, his family said. Mu'taz Arafat, 35, was tied and stripped to his underwear by four masked gunmen who raided his home, the victim's brother, Muhammad, told Ma'an. The victim's brother further said assailants attacked Arafat's wife, adding that he believes the attackers to have been members of the Palestinian Authority security forces. Arafat was detained for over an hour, and, upon being released by his kidnappers, walked to the PA security forces headquarters where he received treatment, his brother said. Major Ashraf Mutlaq, Nablus police spokesman, said an investigation was launched into the incident in order to identify and arrest the assailants. Mutlaq denied PA security force involvement in the incident, saying that forces do not operate at night.
Egyptian forces detain 12 Gaza children
3/30/2010 - Al-Arish - Ma'an - Egyptian authorities detained 12 Palestinian children attempting to enter Egypt on Monday, through Gaza's subterranean tunnel complex. Egyptian police said they seized the boys, aged between 10 and 17, after ambushing them to reveal the location of the tunnels in use. The boys told Egyptian forces that they were attempting to flee the dire economic situation in the Gaza Strip, police said. Meanwhile, Egyptian forces raided a warehouse used to store goods for smuggling into Gaza in the Al-Barahma neighborhood near the Egyptian-Gaza border to the south. [end]
ECHO program helps rehabilitate former child prisoners
3/30/2010 - Bethlehem - Ma'an - Since its launch almost one year ago, an EU commission child rehabilitation program has offered its intervention services to almost 500 ex-detainee children under the age of 18, and 291 parents. Save the Children Sweden with funding from the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO) and in partnership with YMCA have held an event at the premises of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society in Ramallah marking the completion of phase I of the Post-trauma Rehabilitation of Palestinian Ex-detainee Children program, a statement read. The program was launched almost one year ago in eleven districts of the West Bank; the second phase is due to commence in early April 2010." It's been quite a full year for the Post-trauma Rehabilitation Program!" said Eyad Al-Araj, country director of Save the Children Sweden.

Report: British MPs call for review of arms export to Israel
3/30/2010 - Bethlehem - Ma'an/Agencies - A group of British lawmakers will callon Tuesday for a review of the way arms deals to Israel are approved, after the government admitted British equipment was "almost certainly" used during Israel's Operation Cast Lead, British media reported. The British daily The Guardian quoted a House of Commons report on strategic exports controls, which stated, "it is regrettable that arms exports to Israel were almost certainly used in Operation Cast Lead [the attack on Gaza]." This is in direct contravention to the UK government's policy that UK arms exports to Israel should not be used in the occupied territories," the report read. Fayyad joins protest to mark Land Day
3/30/2010 - Salfit - Ma'an - Prime Minister Salam Fayyad joined over 200 Israeli, Palestinian and internationals marking Land Day on Tuesday in the village of Qarawat Bani Hassan, in the West Bank governorate of Salfit. The march began at around 10am and lasted until 12:30pm, Israeli peace activist Jonathan Pollack said, beginning near theEin Entweteg Spring in the village. Qarawat Bani Hassan, located thirty kilometers southwest of Nablus, is home to roughly 4,000 people, most of them refugees from Kufr Bara. Approximately 89% of the village's land, including the Ein Enwetef spring, is in Area C, under complete Israeli control, and "is in constant threat of annexation and settlement expansion," Pollack said. Israeli settlers have been building the Havat Yaair settlement outpost on a hilltop above the the Ein Enwetef spring since 2003 on land belonging to Palestinians from the village of Qarawat Bani Hassan.

Hamas: Emerging gap between Israel and Europe

Senior Hamas leader Salah Bardawil released a statement following an announcement that the UK would review its arms deals with Israel, which came on the heels of the UK's expulsion of an Israeli ambassador who the country said was involved in passport fraud used in the assassination of a Hamas leader in Dubai earlier this year. The European Union announced in early March that settlement goods exported by Israel would not be party to the trade agreements between the union and Israel, but a recent meeting of the EU Foreign Ministers decided to approve a deal on more integrated trade on several industrial products.

We call for the release of Abbas Zaki and people arrested during a peaceful demonstration in support of freedom of access to the Holy City for a major Christian religious holiday." Gaza banks on strike after de facto raid on branch
3/30/2010 - Gaza - Ma'an - All banks across the Gaza Strip announced a general strike on Tuesday, protesting an attack against a local branch on Monday by de facto police. Banks announced action after the Monetary Authority called on branches to respond to the attack against a Palestine Bank in the Ar-Rimal neighborhood of Gaza City, in which 1 million shekels was seized by de facto security forces who were executing a court order demanding the branch return the amount to the Patients' Friends Society. Despite the order, the Monetary Authority reportedly froze the funds following a dispute with the board of directors. A statement from the society in Gaza said the money in question was for charitable medical work, and failing to return the sum "would put the lives of patients at risk."The society added that in July 2009, the Monetary Authority decided to freeze the transfer of funds "based on political decisions that have no relation with the society itself."

A statement from the de facto government's Ministry of the Interior said the Gaza native phoned a former intelligence officer asking for details of men the Fatah official had earlier accused Hamas police of detaining. The accusation is the latest in a string of events following from a deadly day of clashes in Gaza on Friday, where Al-Qassam fighters with Hamas said they participated in an attack on Israeli soldiers entering the Strip for reasons that remain unclear. The attack lead to the death of two soldiers and two Palestinian fighters, as well as the injury of several civilians in the fighting that took place following the initial attack. Largest Palestinian scarf still being weaved
3/30/2010 - Nablus - Ma'an - The world's largest traditional Palestinian scarf, the keffiyeh, is still being weaved, the Friends of Palestine Society said Tuesday. The society had originally intended to unveil the record-breaking scarf on Land Day and put it before the Guinness Book of World Record's acceptance committee. However, the society said, the keffiyeh is in its final stages and will announce its official unveiling at a launch ceremony near the late Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's tomb in Ramallah, then at a folk festival in Qalqiliya. The 500 by 5 meter checkered scarf was undertaken by the society in coordination with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Culture. The project was launched on 31 January but its initial reveal date was postponed due to difficulties in contacting Guinness book of records officials.

Rachel Corrie, an American human rights defender from Olympia, Washington, was crushed to death on March 16, 2003 by a Caterpillar D9R bulldozer. She had been nonviolently demonstrating against Palestinian home demolitions with fellow members of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), a Palestinian-led movement committed to resisting the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land using nonviolent, direct action methods and principles. An Israeli military police investigator, who was part of the team that investigated Rachel's killing, completed his testimony on March 22.
