3/20/2010 - Bethlehem - Ma'an - Israeli forces killed a Palestinian teenager in the northern West Bank on Saturday afternoon, medics said. Medics said Muhammad Qadus, 16, was struck in the chest by a live bullet fired by Israeli forces amid violent clashes in Iraq Burin, a Palestinian village south of Nablus. Qadus was transported to a local hospital by private car after Israeli forces held up a Red Crescent ambulance called to the scene, medics told Ma'an. The teenager was pronounced dead shortly after arriving, they added. Another 16-year-old Palestinian boy, identified as Useid Abed An-Nasser Qadus, was seriously injured. Medics said he sustained a live bullet to the stomach and was transferred to a hospital for emergency surgery. 3/20/2010 - Hebron - Ma'an - Israeli authorities have asked the family of a detained 15-year-old boy to pay 1,500 Israeli shekels (about 400 US dollars) to release the minor, a prisoners solidarity group reported on Saturday. The boy, Ratib Abu Meizar, was detained on Friday evening in the Zahid neighborhood of central of Hebron in the southern West Bank. He was taken to a detention center housed in the illegal Israeli settlement of Kiryat Arba. Amjad Najjar, director of the Palestinian Prisoners Society in Hebron, told Ma'an that Abu Meizar's detention "is a continuation of Israel's policy of blackmailing the families of detained Palestinian children, a policy which has become official. " Najjar urged international children's rights groups to exert pressure on the government of Switzerland and other signatories to the Fourth Geneva Convention to encourage Israel to abide by its responsibilities.

3/20/2010 - Gaza - Ma'an - Israeli forces detained over 250 Palestinians during last week's clashes in East Jerusalem, the de facto Ministry of Detainees and Ex-detainees Affairs reported Saturday. The ministry said more than 30 minors under the age of 14 were detained, as well as a number of journalists who were covering the protests, which came after Israel finished renovating the Hurva synagogue in the Old City's Jewish quarter. The move was seen as provocative because Palestinians do not have similar rights over their own holy sites. In a statement, the Hamas-run ministry reported that most of the Palestinian detainees were from the Al-Isawiya, Wadi Al-Joz, and As-Suwwana neighborhoods of Jerusalem. These areas witnessed fierce confrontations between Israeli forces and Palestinian youths. Detainees were taken to the Russian Compound detention center in Jerusalem, the ministry said.

Agricultural roads between the northern Jordan Valley village and its lands were sealed off, and farmers were denied access to their lands. Local residents said forces issued a "closed military zone" order and collected ID cards of residents attempting to enter or leave the village. Israeli forces have carried out similar closures in the past, usually on the pretext that village residents threaten security in nearby settlements. Extremists burn cars in Jerusalem
3/20/2010 - Jerusalem - Ma'an - Jewish extremists set fire to Palestinian vehicles in several neighborhoods of East Jerusalem on Saturday morning. Ma'an's Jerusalem correspondent said cars were set ablaze in Ras Al-Amoud, Wadi Al-Joz, Salah Ad-Din Street, and Sultan Suleiman Street. An Israeli police spokesman did not immediately return calls seeking comment. Last week, ultra-Orthodox Jewish groups distributed a flyer threatening to assault residents of Jerusalem if they continued to protest the rededication of the Hurva synagogue in the Old City of Jerusalem. They also plan to organize a "provocative rally" in the Silwan neighborhood on Sunday, the reporter said. Israeli police have offered contradictory statements on whether or not the rally was approved. Police sources said earlier that it had received approval, while other sources later claimed it was still being considered.
Berkeley student senate passes divestment bill
3/20/2010 - Bethlehem - Ma'an - For the first time in the University of California history, the UC Berkeley student senate has approved a bill to divest from two US companies in response to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and its siege and bombardment of the Gaza Strip. The Senate bill directs both the UC Regents and the Student Government to divest from General Electric and United Technologies. General Electric manufactures Apache helicopter engines; United Technologies manufactures Sikorsky helicopters and F16 aircraft engines. In addition, the bill creates a task force to look into furthering a socially responsible investment policy for the UC system. Student Senator Rahul Patel supported the bill, declaring that "in the 1980s the Student Government was a central actor in demanding that the university divest from South African apartheid. "
Gaza residents continue testing no-go zone
3/20/2010 - Gaza - Ma'an - Palestinians on Saturday entered 50 meters into the Israeli army's buffer zone east of As-Salqa in central Gaza, near the Israeli military post at Kisufim. Mahmoud Az-Zeq, one of the activists, described the rally to Ma'an as "clear, popular, daring, and a real breakthrough," adding that Israeli forces did not open fire at protesters, despite being carried out "directly next to Kisufim. " Protesters waved Palestinian flags, with young men reaching the barbed wire which separates Gaza from Israel by only 50 meters. "The goal of this peace action is to re-guide the compass of the popular struggle toward the Israeli occupation, in addition to get Palestinians out of the state of despair and frustration in Gaza," Az-Zeq added. On Thursday, Israeli forces opened fire on Popular Committee Against the Buffer Zone march as the group continued to test the military's policing of the no-go area.
Child detained in Jerusalem refugee camp amid clashes
3/20/2010 - Jerusalem - Ma'an - A child was detained by Israeli forces during ongoing clashes on Saturday in the Shu'fat refugee camp, northern occupied East Jerusalem. Ma'an's Jerusalem correspondent said undercover forces detained the child, as violence erupted between Israeli forces and young Palestinians inside the refugee camp. Earlier on Saturday, Israeli forces detained a Palestinian woman at the entrance of the Shu'fat refugee camp, after preventing her from passing through a military checkpoint. Locals said an argument ensued between Ibtesam Mustafa Khalil Abu Deiyah, 42, and Israeli forces who blocked her from entering. Abu Deiyah was reportedly assaulted before being detained by Israeli forces manning the checkpoint, which serves as an entrance. An Israeli resident claimed his car had been stolen with his two children inside the vehicle, according to the Israeli daily Haaretz. However, the resident admitted that his children were in fact at home and that he lied to police "to encourage them and Israeli forces into finding his car," the daily wrote. 3/20/2010 - Jericho - Ma'an - Palestinian security forces at the Allenby Bridge crossing into Jordan arrested 14 fugitives attempting to flee over the past week, a police report said Saturday. Those arrested were wanted for various criminal charges, including fraud, the report said. The report further said the Allenby Bridge witnessed a noticeable rise in the number of travelers, with the transit of 14,594 individuals in both directions. Entering Jericho were 6,537 individuals, including 106 foreign nationals and 30 Israeli ID-card holders. Meanwhile, 7,742 people entered Jordan through the Allenby crossing, including57 international passport holders, 51 with Israeli ID cards, and eight patients transiting for treatment in Palestinian ambulances. The alleged Israeli agents are said to have admitted under interrogation that they were recruited by Mossad in European countries, and were on a military base surveillance mission in the northern and southern areas of Lebanon, as well as Beirut, Lebanese media reported. The suspects further told interrogators they possessed sophisticated equipment, including LCD TVs able to transmit information by satellite, according to the reports. 3/20/2010 - Gaza - Ma'an - The Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine said Saturday it welcomed the Quartet's demand that Israel halt settlement construction, calling for a recent decision to build in East Jerusalem to be revoked. "The maneuvers of the right-wing government and the expanding extremist right has paralyzed and obstructed the decisions taken by the Quartet, which provided a similar report to that of the international committee in 2001, presided over by George Mitchell, which called for a total settlement halt," the DFLP statement read. The DFLP urged the Quartet "to bring a new resolution before the UN Security Council to stop all forms of settlements and the demolition of Palestinians homes in Jerusalem and the West Bank under the Seventh Article of the UN convention. Hamas rebuffed media reports that a US congressman delivered a message to Egyptian officials detailing the movement's concessions in reconciliation talks and agreeing to a unity government. 3/20/2010 - Hebron - Ma'an - The Black Revolution, a Hebron rap group, released its debut album on Saturday entitled Revolution, with songs describing the situation in the southern West Bank city in particular, and conditions across the occupied Palestinian territories. Written by band members and recorded at the studios of the Palestinian Center for Information, Research and Development, the album includes nine songs. Two of the songs, Soldier and BR, have accompanying music videos, directed by Shadi Ash-Sharif and Mousa Al-Qawasmi in Gaza, with footage of Israel's 2008-2009 assault on the coastal enclave taken from the archives of the Palestinian Broadcasting Cooperation. The album's cover sleeve includes the lyrics in both Arabic and English. The order issued by the GOC Central Command implementing this restriction is an act against the freedom to demonstrate. The fact that the army issued such a sweeping order, and that it is supposed to be in effect for such a long period, requires an immediate petition to the High Court of Justice asking it to block this dangerous and damaging move, which lacks any justification. The freedom to demonstrate is a basic right and an extension of freedom of expression. The bill calling for divestment was co-sponsored by students Emiliano Huet-Vaughn and Tom Pessah, the latter an anti-Zionist Israeli citizen. ISM volunteer Ellen Stark was shot at point blank range (4 meters) with a rubber bullet as she stood with medics, Popular Committee members and other internationals. ISM co-founder Huwaida Arraf was arrested while negotiating with the IOF to allow Ellen through the military line to get to the hospital. According to Ellen, “we were standing on Palestinian land, in support of the village who’s land has been confiscated but we weren’t even demonstrating yet. We were standing with medics who were also shot with tear gas. ”Ellen’s had to undergo surgery to remove the bullet, which was lodged between her ulna and radius of her right arm.
