Separation wall to isolate Bethlehem village from Beit Jala
3/7/2010 - Bethlehem - Ma'an - Israeli authorities confiscated 300 dunums of Palestinian land in Beit Jala, Bethlehem to complete the separation wall's construction, the head of the Bethlehem anti-wall committee said on Sunday. Khalid Azza said once the wall's construction is complete, Beit Jala would be isolated from the neighboring Al-Walaja village, describing the act as "terrorism and piracy against Palestinian land. " "By continuing the build the separation wall in Beit Jalla, the Israeli government will crucify the city, just as Jesus Christ was crucified," he said. The Israeli High Court of Justice ordered a halt to the wall's construction in the area in 2004, but Azza said the Israeli government "brushes aside" all resolutions and continues to challenge the international community. Dozens of Palestinians and foreign solidarity activists rallied near Bethlehem on Wednesday, in protest of the. . . .

Split PLO backs return to negotiations
3/7/2010 - Ramallah - Ma'an - In a controversial vote, the Palestine Liberation Organization's (PLO) Executive Committee gave its support on Sunday to proposed indirect peace negotiations with Israel. " In light of the Arab stance and on the basis on its national responsibility, the Palestinian leadership decided to give the US proposal a chance, holding indirect talks between the Palestinian and Israeli sides, which will initially focus on the issues of borders and security," senior PLO official Yasser Abed Rabbo told reporters following the four-hour meeting. The Arab League gave its blessing to the negotiations on Wednesday, paving the way for the renewal of talks that were halted when Israel launched a war in the Gaza Strip in December 2008. US President Barack Obama's administration has been pressuring Israel and the PLO to return to negotiations since the end of the war, which left some 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis dead.

Israel continues closure of Jericho’s northern entrance
3/7/2010 - Jericho - Ma'an - Israeli forces have maintained the closure of the northern entrance to Jericho with road blocks, forcing Palestinian passengers to drive an additional ten kilometers on the bypass road to reach the city center. A taxi driver, Abu Muhammad, says he has to travel 15 kilometers instead of five as theIsraeli army continues manning the"unnecessary checkpoint" on the main road between Jericho and Al-"˜Auja village. "It is like travelling around Cape of Good Hope, but this is the occupation with its arrogance," Abu Muhammad said sarcastically. He added that even patients or pregnant women might be endangered as ambulances are forced to travel the additional ten kilometers. The northern entrance to Jericho has been closed since 27 September 2000, one day before theoutbreak of the Second Intifada. According to Abu Muhammad, Israeli authorities use security pretexts to continue closing the route. "

Gaza marks 1,000 days of Israel’s siege
3/7/2010 - Gaza - Ma'an - Protests against the crippling siege imposed on the Gaza Strip should spread across the world, said Palestinian lawmaker Jamal Al-Khudari on Sunday, as the blockade entered its 1,000th day. "The siege harmed the people, as well as the environment, health, the economy and social life. It constitutes a serious attemptto suffocate the people and break their will," Al-Khudari told reporters during a news conference. He announced that 500 Gaza residents have died as a result of the siege, most of whom were patients who could not receive appropriate medical treatment. Al-Khudari pointed out that one million Gaza residents live on humanitarian aid channeled by Arab and foreign countries as well as the UN. " The Palestinian economy in Gaza has been completely destroyed with more than 140,000 people unemployed, which amounts to 80% of Gaza's manpower. "

Israel releases 12-year-old boy from prison
3/7/2010 - Hebron - Ma'an - Hassan Al-Muhtaseb, 12, was released Sunday, when an Israeli military court in Ofer prison ordered his father to pay 2,000 shekel fine. The Palestinian Prisoners' Society appointed ten lawyers to assist in the child's defense. Many of his relatives were allowed to be present during the hearing. "The boy was detained near his family home, and there were no witnesses who testified that he threw stones at Israeli soldiers. No indictment was filed against the boy. This hearing contradicts the 1989 convention on children's rights which Israel signed in 1991 according to which a minor can't be jailed with adults. Thus, we demand immediate release of Hassan," said one of the lawyers representing the child. Heated discussions ensued during the first session of the hearing between the lawyers and the Israeli judge who insisted that the boy's father, Fadl Al-Muhtaseb, pay a 2,000 shekel fine.

3/7/2010 - Jerusalem - Ma'an - Israeli Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein filed a litany of charges against senior Fatah official Hatem Abdul Qader, all in relation to recent civil unrest among Palestinians in Jerusalem. Abdul Qader was charged with violating court orders against visiting the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, inciting riots, and assaulting police officers. A trial has been set for 27 April. Palestinian legal officials said Abdul Qader could face more than a year in prison if convicted. Abdul Qader himself rejected the charges saying in a statement, "the occupation is attempting to punish me for political activity in Jerusalem. " Abdul Qader, a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) and former cabinet minister for Jerusalem affairs, has been arrested several times by Israeli forces, particularly during demonstrations at the Al-Aqsa compound.

3/7/2010 - Bethlehem - Ma'an - Israeli police announced that the Al-AqsaMosque compound in the Old City of Jerusalem opened to all Muslim worshipers Sunday, lifting the age restriction imposed during last week's Jewish holiday. Despite the restriction on movement being lifted, heavy police and border guard presence is expected in the Old City in the aftermath of clashes that erupted between Israeli forces and Palestinians following the raiding of the compound after Friday prayers. Dozens of Palestinians were injured as Israeli forces entered East Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque compound following the weekly Friday prayers, firing tear gas, rubber-coated bullets and stun grenades. Some 200 local protestors attended the rally, with residents attempting to plant 30 olive tree seedlings on land overturned by Israeli bulldozers. They were prevented by Israeli soldiers and border guards deployed in the area. Clashes ensued when young Palestinian men began hurling stones toward Israeli forces, who responded by firing rubber-coated bullets and tear-gas canisters. The march began from the city center on the road toward the Cremisan monestary, where Israeli bulldozers began overturning land to make way for the separation wall. Palestinian Legislative Council members Mustafa Barghouthi and Fayez As-Saqa joined the protest, as well as members of the Beit Jala. . .

Abbas: No state without Jerusalem
3/7/2010 - Ramallah - Ma'an - "Israel's ongoing settlement and expansion policy at the expense of inalienable Palestinian rights will have disastrous consequences," said President Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday. Abbas' remarks were made during a celebration of the Prophet Mohammed's birthday at the Palestinian Authority Ministry of Endowments, where he told attendees that continued violations against Muslim and Christian sites in the occupied Palestinian territories constituted a threat to international, Arab and Palestinian efforts to reach a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East. "These violations promise a dark future, in light of the absence of peace and stability, which we all look forward to achieving for the best of the region's peoples. " "No Palestinian state can be established without Jerusalem, neither can a peace agreement be reached without Jerusalem as the eternal capital. . . "

"Deep in the roots of these olive trees, there is something that reminds us that our people lived here from the beginning and will continue to the end," he told the gathered crowds of protestors. " We will continue to work and build in all Palestinian territories occupied in 1967, paying no attention to the unjust classifications and the so-called C zones. "

Fayyad: Gaza siege must end
3/7/2010 - Ramallah - Ma'an - Israel must stop building settlements in the West Bank and lift the siege of Gaza in order to restore credibility to the peace process, Palestinian caretaker Prime Minister Salam Fayyad said on Sunday. Fayyad made these remarks as the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) leadership voted to allow President Mahmoud Abbas to resume indirect peace negotiations with Israel. Fayyad held talks at his Ramallah office on Sunday with Dutch Parliament speaker Gerdi Verbeet who is on a four-day visit to Israel and the West Bank. The prime minister told Verbeet that the European Union foreign ministers' statement on 8 December was a "landmark" and a "serious opportunity to strengthen the European role" in the Quartet of Middle East peace brokers. A stronger EU role in the Quartet, Fayyad argued, would "lend credibility to the political process and it ability to end the occupation and to implement the two state solution on the 1967 borders. "

Quiet revolution that is freezing Palestinians out of Jerusalem
3/7/2010 - The Guardian - Evictions and planning decisions on the ground are jeopardising prospects for a two-state Middle East peace deal - Rory McCarthy, Jerusalem - In the brochure handed out by the mayor's office in Jerusalem last week, there were pretty sketches illustrating a development that would turn a poor, crowded area into a park, with streams, restaurants and hotels. It talked of reviving the area's "ancient glory" and returning the site to "an island of green" just outside the walls of the Old City. True, some houses would have to be demolished but they had been built illegally and anyway the plan was a "win-win" for both the residents and the city, said the mayor, Nir Barkat. Except that Jerusalem is not any city: it is at the heart of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians and planning projects like this are political and potentially volatile.

A Call To Action From Rachel Corrie’s Parents
3/7/2010 - Desert Peace - Call to Action: Corrie Trial in Israel, March 10-24, 2009 - Friends, Craig and Cindy Corrie - As many of you know, a civil lawsuit in the case of our daughter Rachel Corrie is scheduled for trial in the Haifa District Court beginning March 10, 2010. A human rights observer and activist, Rachel, 23, tried nonviolently to offer protection for a Palestinian family whose home was threatened with demolition by the Israeli military. On March 16, 2003, she was crushed to death by an Israel Defense Force (IDF) Caterpillar D9R bulldozer in Rafah, Gaza. The lawsuit is one piece of our family’s seven-year effort to pursue justice for our daughter and sister. We hope this trial will illustrate the need for accountability for thousands of lives lost, or indelibly injured, by occupation—in a besieged and beleaguered Gaza and throughout Palestine/Israel; bring attention to the assault on nonviolent human. . . .

VIDEO - Finkelstein in Prague
3/7/2010 - P U L S E - Last week, Norman Finkelstein delivered a series of lectures in Prague as part of his European speaking tour. Finkelstein was initially invited to speak at the prestigious Czech Academy of Sciences but had his invitation revoked less than 24 hours prior to his scheduled talk, allegedly at the behest of the Prime Minister’s office. A similar fate befell Finkelstein’s appearance in Munich and Berlin, where the Heinrich Boll and Rosa Luxembourg Foundations cancelled the events, following “a concerted campaign by neoconservative and pro-Israeli pressure groups, such as Honestly Concerned and BAK Shalom, known for their unconditional support of Israeli policies and the defamation of critics as anti-Semites.

Taher, a UCI protester originally from Gaza, writes that heckling Oren was right
3/7/2010 - P U L S E - Taher Herzalla is a third-year political science major at UC Riverside and was part of the “Irvine 11" that protested Michael Oren’s recent address. Taher is himself originally from Gaza and has been directly affected by the hafrada regime’s brutality. He had this piece published in the Orange County Register: be sure to write to the editor or leave a quick comment to thank them for publishing it. Check out their blog, Stand with the Eleven and spread their Stand With the Eleven action flyer. Today, our American civil rights movement is praised worldwide for its humanism, righteousness, and courage. But, it was not always this way. The same leaders we now hold in high esteem were once labeled as rabble-rousers for their principled and unpopular stands. It is no surprise then, that those who stand today against one of the greatest injustices of our time are similarly labeled. "

PLO gives approval for indirect talks with Israel
3/7/2010 - Yahoo! News - RAMALLAH, West Bank – A skeptical Palestinian leadership agreed Sunday to hold U. S. -mediated peace talks with Israel for four months, effectively ending a 14-month breakdown in communications between the two sides. Sunday's decision marks a first achievement in more than a year for U. S. diplomacy in the Israeli-Palestinian arena and a softening in the position of the Palestinian leadership, which has insisted it would not begin talks unless Israel fully froze construction in its settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. The indirect format is meant to give the Palestinians the necessary political cover to resume talks. However, they warned they would walk away if the outlines of a border deal with Israel have not emerged after four months. They also ruled out subsequent direct talks without a complete Israeli settlement construction freeze.

’Ajami’ director says he doesn’t represent Israel
3/7/2010 - Yahoo! News - JERUSALEM – The Israeli-Arab co-director of the Oscar-nominated film "Ajami" set off a last-minute uproar Sunday, saying he won't be representing Israel when he attends the Academy Awards ceremony in Hollywood. "Ajami" depicts the brutal life of drugs, violence and poverty in a mixed Jewish-Arab neighborhood in the Mediterranean city of Jaffa. It was nominated for best foreign-language film. Scandar Copti directed the film along with a Jewish-Israeli partner, Yaron Shani. Copti has been critical of Israel's policies toward its Arab minority, which makes up about one-fifth of Israel's population of 7 million citizens. Israel's Arabs, unlike Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza, enjoy the benefits of Israeli citizenship. However, they frequently suffer discrimination in housing and job opportunities, and their communities often receive less in government funds than Jewish towns.

EU foreign policy chief to visit Gaza in March
3/7/2010 - Ha'aretz - DPA - The European Union's foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, said Saturday she was planning to stop in Gaza during an upcoming Middle East trip later on this month. It would be the first high-level visit in over a year of an EU representative in the area, which is under an Israeli blockade and is ruled by Hamas, a Palestinian movement listed as a terrorist organization by the EU and the United States. "I have asked to go to Gaza, yes," Ashton said at the start of the second and last days of talks with EU foreign ministers in Cordoba, Spain. She added that she does not have a precise date yet, but pointed out that her Middle East trip "starts a week on Sunday. "Ashton's predecessor Javier Solana last visited Gaza in February 2009, in the aftermath of an Israeli invasion that caused significant destruction in the area. Israel intervened and launched a large-scale military operation in late December 2008 with the aim to stop rocket launches from Gaza, which it blames on Hamas.

Report: Hamas admits losing control in Gaza
3/7/2010 - Ha'aretz - Gaza in anarchy as extremist groups challenge Hamas regime, military chief tells Damascus leader. - In a letter to Hamas political chief Khaled Meshal, the group's senior military commander has admitted losing control in Gaza, the Arabic-language newspaper A-Sharq Al-Awsat reported on Saturday. According to the London-based newspaper, quoted by Army Radio, Ahmed Jabri sent an urgent dispatch to the Damascus-based Meshal, warning him that the security situation in Gaza is "deteriorating". "Recently a series of explosions has raised fears in Gaza," Jabri wrote. Gaza had descended into "anarchy", he said. In the letter, Jabri reportedly admitted to a string of errors in governing the strip, where Islamist Hamas seized control in a bloody confrontation with its rival secular movement, Fatah, in the summer of 2007. Hamas is convinced that extremist 'jihadi' Islamist movements are behind the bombings, which could mark the start of a push to oust the de facto government, the newspaper said.

Hamas, Fatah prisoners reconcile in Israeli prison
3/6/2010 - China View - RAMALLAH, March 6 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian prisoners from rival Hamas and Fatah on Saturday declared reconciliation in their Israeli jail as a symbolic step to urge their leaders to bury the hatchet. Under the mediation of prisoners from the Islamic Jihad movement, Hamas and Fatah detainees signed a deal at Ofar prison near the West Bank city of Ramallah, according to a statement of a Palestinian prisoners' rights group sent to the media. The key achievement of the agreement is that prisoners from the two factions would share rooms again, the Prisoners Studies Center said, adding that Hamas and Fatah prisoners stopped living in the same room when Hamas routed pro-Abbas forces and seized control of Gaza in mid-2007. The statement said efforts are underway to achieve similar agreements in 25 prisons and detention facilities where Israel hold more than 8,000 Palestinians.

Berri urges Arabs to rethink plan for indirect Israel talks
3/6/2010 - Daily Star - BEIRUT: Speaker Nabih Berri called on the Arab League on Friday to reconsider its decision to engage in indirect negotiations with Israel and follow in Lebanon and Syria’s footsteps in rejecting such step. In a statement issued by his press office, Berri stressed the need to “widen” the Palestinian people’s avenues for resisting Israeli occupation by empowering them through increased support for resistance movements, and escalating this support against attempts to Judaicize Jerusalem. “Once again, we will not rush to condemn Israeli aggression, and state the obvious, since we have already called on Arab [countries and institutions] to take a step that goes beyond condemnation, and get back to the root of facing occupation,” Berri said. Berri highlighted recent attempts to add the Ibrahim Al-Khalil and Bilal Ben Rabah mosques in the cities of Hebron and Bethlehem, respectively, to Israeli. . . .

American University of Beirut Anti-Normalization Petition
3/7/2010 - Petition Online - To: AUB Community -. . . . We note that beginning the first of March of the year 2010, Dr. Hanafi will be traveling in Europe with Dr. Adi Ophir of Tel Aviv University to promote their edited book at several universities including the London School of Economics, the University of Cambridge and the School of Oriental and African Studies. The use of the name of the American University of Beirut lends institutional legitimacy and intellectual authority to these efforts in a manner that sets an alarming precedent. We expect that this association will be used abroad to signal that normal academic exchange between institutions in Lebanon and Israel is now an accepted practice, leaving a distinct impression that we have transcended the conflict and its root causes. It sends a message to our colleagues, our students, our public, and the world at large that there is no real issue between us and that we can enter into a normal relationship of academic collaboration.
