U.S. enables mistreatment By Mark Hage, Times Argus 3/30/2010 On a recent trip to Israel, Joe Biden, a self-professed Zionist, was purportedly embarrassed by the Jewish state's pronouncement that it would build 1,600 more housing units in East Jerusalem.Someone should send the vice president a map of Israeli settlements in that occupied city and across the West Bank before his tears dry. Better yet, send him a record of his senatorial votes on military and economic aid to Israel. For 43 years occupied Palestine has been systematically colonized and dispossessed of its indigenous Arab population, in collusion with civil servants like Biden, Clinton and Obama, who enthusiastically footed the bill and provided political cover.Biden's fit of temper in Tel Aviv was sparked by the timing of Israel's latest affront, not its substance. Jewish settlements and their road networks eat up 46 percent of the West Bank; 500,000 Jews, many of them born outside of Israel, are living on stolen Palestinian land. Israel has plans, well publicized, to expand its colonies in East Jerusalem by 50,000 housing units, and there is no end in sight to its barbaric siege of Gaza.Bibi Netanyahu has no intention of reversing course in East Jerusalem or anywhere else in the occupied territories. The Israeli leader's disregard for international law is surpassed only by his contempt for Palestinians and their national rights He has learned to recite on cue platitudes like "two-state solution" to keep Washington happy. But he knows from long experience, no matter how much Palestinian land his settlers confiscate or whom he embarrasses in the Obama administration, America's cash, bullets and Security Council vetoes will keep coming Israel's way. | ||
