Support cutting aid to Israel By Jean Archibald, The Burlington Free Press 3/23/2011 I am writing on behalf of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza, East Jerusalem and Israel.Since 1989, I have made six trips to the Ramallah area, to visit in-law relatives. These folks are living under the oppressive policies of the Israeli occupation. They are unable to move around their territory because of checkpoints, the separation wall, the lack of freedom and identity. They are tired, discouraged, not hopeful about the future. From their homes they have watched the steady growth of a huge settlement on what was once their land. For a while I was hopeful myself, believing that the "peace process" might bring progress. It has not.I write in support of the seventh annual Israeli Apartheid week. This week nonviolent protests are going on in more than 60 cities in the world. As a Vermonter, I join the international community in calling on Israel to cease building settlements, end the occupation, tear down the separation wall and cease discriminatory treatment of Palestinians.I believe that our huge aid package to Israel should be cut, and I support BDS (boycott, divest, sanction). This would involve targeting expenditures, both corporate and private, which subsidize Israeli military expenditures and the building of settlements. | ||
