Madcap action
By Jules Rabin, Burlington Free Press   4/22/2004

Israel, under Ariel Sharon, has flouted international law repeatedly by establishing settlements in the occupied territories of Palestine. The 1949 Geneva Convention, which is the controlling law in such matters, expressly forbids such settlements, as is well known, and both the U.N. Security Council and General Assembly have condemned Israel repeatedly for establishing them.

Now our president, who proclaims himself a man of unswerving principle, has rewarded Sharon's and Israel's violations by breaking the policy of every previous administration and making it known that Sharon's intention of making the West Bank's settlements permanent is all right with him.

This is another madcap action of Bush, whose effect is to draw down on us the hatred of Arabs everywhere, and to scandalize the rest of the world in the bargain.
