A War's Rising Toll
By Anne Bordonaro, Newsweek   10/7/2003

I believe your inclusion of American citizens killed in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the toll for your article "A War's Rising Toll" was completely inappropriate and misleading (September 12, 2003). The Israeli government has tried continously since September 11, 2001 to link its war on the Palestinians with our war on terror. However, they are clearly two different wars with different causes.

The Americans who were killed in Israel were not killed because they are Americans, nor were they in any way serving America in a war on terror. They should not have been included in this list. However, if you are going to include Americans killed by Palestinians, then in fairness, you must include Palestinians with American citizenship and American peace activists, such as Rachel Corey, who have been killed by Israeli soldiers or civilians.

I do not believe your story helped us to understand the complicated issues in the Middle East. It simply muddied the waters.
