FILM 8/17: Palestine Is Still The Issue
Tuesday, August 17, 7:00pm
Black Sheep Books, 5 State Street, Montpelier, VT - In 1977, the award-winning journalist and filmmaker, John Pilger, made a documentary film called Palestine Is Still the Issue. It told the story of the ethnic cleansing of Palestine in 1948 and the conquest of the West Bank and Gaza in 1967. 25 years later, he returned to the Occupied Territories to ask why Palestinians are still living under a brutal, settler-colonial occupation. In this second film with the same title, Pilger interviews Israelis and Palestinians, documents the humiliation and dangers of life under military occupation, and explores why “the fate and struggle of the Palestinians are not just critical to the overdue recognition of their basic human rights, but also central to whether the region, and the wider world, are plunged into war.”
FILM 9/7: The Iron Wall
Tuesday, September 7, 7:00pm
Black Sheep Books, 5 State Street, Montpelier, VT - Mohammed Alatar’s The Iron Wall takes its name from a 1923 essay by the revisionist Zionist leader Vladimir Jabotinsky, who counseled that the European Jewish colonial project in Palestine could succeed “only under the protection of a power that is independent of the native population—behind an IRON WALL, which the native population cannot breach.” The film documents the history and growth of Israel’s illegal colonies in the Occupied Territories, and reveals how Israel’s construction of its Separation Wall helps secure the settlements as permanent and irreversible facts on the ground. The film warns of the effect of these settlements on the possibility of peace and the future of the region.
