Israel's controversial West Bank barrier
Middle East Online 10/3/2003
JERUSALEM & GAZA CITY - The Israeli army is easing its rules of engagement near the barrier that is being erected in the West Bank in a bid to further prevent Palestinian attacks, a spokesman said Friday. "In order to prevent terrorists from approaching the fence with the aim of infiltrating Israel or sabotaging the construction work on this fence, the Israeli army has gradually started to ease its rules of engagement near the fence," he said. "The Palestinians will only be allowed to come close to the fence in designated areas where gates are built in and only during opening hours. They will have to coordinate their passage with the local Israeli-Palestinian liaison office," the spokesman said."The same engagement rules used in the Gaza Strip would apply in the West Bank" near the barrier, he added. "Any Palestinian coming too close to the fence can only have aggressive intentions."....According to the Maariv daily, Israeli troops will be allowed to open fire before the completion of the procedure for arresting suspects, which includes warning shots. The newspaper also said that in recent weeks, the army had experimented with a line 50-metres from the fence within which anybody, whether Israeli or Palestinian, could be shot without warning. more..

Fourth Palestinian child killed in confrontations at the apartheid wall
Palestine Monitor 12/10/2003
Confrontations between Palestinians and Israeli armed forces at the site of the wall dividing the West Bank claimed the life of a fourth Palestinian child yesterday.16 year old Faris Jimzawi from Qalandiya refugee camp near the West Bank city of Ramallah was shot dead yesterday by Israeli soldiers while he and other young boys were trying to remove part of the fence that Israel is building around them.Doctors in Ramallah hospital said that Faris was killed by a live bullet that hit him in the eye, and that he died before he reached the hospital. The spot where Faris was killed has been the site of numerous clashes between Israeli soldiers and Palestinians from the Qalandiya camp seeking to remove the fence to gain access to nearby towns and villages. In total, 15 Palestinian citizens have been killed by Israeli occupying forces in the same area since the outbreak of the Intifada in September 2000.Construction of this section of the fence began three months ago cutting off the camp of 9000 citizens. In some areas, the fence encroaches to within 10 meters of the camp itself, cutting off land belonging to locals. more..
