Fact Sheet: The Apartheid Wall (PDF)
MIFTAH 4/1/2005
Within the “first phase”, 16 villages west of the Wall have been de facto annexed to Israel and some 50 villages are separated from their lands.

Apartheid Wall: Land Theft and Forced Expulsion: The Wall is not being built on, or in most cases near the 1967 Green Line, but rather cuts deep into the West Bank, expanding Israel's theft of Palestinian land and resources.

When completed, the Wall will de facto annex some 47% of the West Bank, isolating communities into bantustans, enclaves and “military zones”.

The Palestinian population in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, including almost 1.5 million refugees, will be living on only 12% of historic Palestine.

Nearly 16% of Palestinians in the West Bank will be “outside” the Wall in the de facto annexed areas by Israel and in unbearable living conditions - the loss of land, markets, movement and livelihoods - and faced with expulsion. This includes over 200,000 residents of East Jerusalem, who will be totally isolated from the rest of the West Bank.

98 % of the settler population will be included in the de facto annexed areas.

The Wall is not a new “idea” - since 1994 the Gaza Strip has been surrounded by a barrier which cuts off the residents from the rest of the world; in the past year Israel has been expanding this barrier as well as building a new “Iron Wall”. more..

Lost Dreams in Deir Al Ghosoon
International Press Center 6/3/2004
TULKAREM, Palestine, June 3, 2004 (IPC)-- The construction of the Israeli Apartheid Wall through the lands of the Deir Al Ghosoon Village in Tulkarem province continue to leave scars on the daily life and suffering of the villagers there, increasing the psychological and economic burdens on their shoulders.

Most of the villagers in Deir Al Ghosoon have lost parts of their lands or all of them to the Israeli Apartheid Wall. The village, which used to be the largest agricultural area in the province, depended mainly on farming and a large percentage of the population have lost their source of livelihood without any consideration for their legal rights or future prospects.

The Israeli Apartheid Wall has so far expropriated 3,000 dunums of land from the village's 7,000 inhabitants, which constituted 20% of the total area of the village.

Emad Ghanem, 30, looked in torment at his land that was expropriated by the Israeli occupation; the land that he inherited from his forefathers. 30 dunums have been expropriated from his lands "like 30 pieces of my body have been ripped off," Ghanem said. more..

How to suffocate a people
By Lynda Wafi and Saud Abu Ramadan, Middle East Times 8/14/2003
Raed Zeid, a six-year-old Palestinian boy from the village of Toura Al Sharqeya, west of the northern West Bank town of Jenin, used to carry his schoolbag and walk to the adjacent village of Nazlet Zeid, where his elementary school is located. He ignored Israeli bulldozers and workers building the security fence between the West Bank and Israel.

Every day, he crossed on foot vast areas of land that were being leveled and razed by the Israeli army, and passed Israeli army machinery. He was indifferent to what was happening.

One cool, sunny morning, Raed left his home as usual and started his morning walk to school, but when he returned, there was a big fence separating him from the solitary house that was built in line with the Jewish settlement of Shakid.

Despite international opposition to the security wall, Israel has continued to build it between the West Bank and Gaza. The wall is not situated on the 1967 borders between the occupied territories and Israel; it has been constructed where a vast area of Palestinian property has been confiscated and villages isolated from the Palestinian community.

That day, Raed did not know what to do. He searched for a gap in the fence, but there was not even enough space for a cat to cross. He grabbed the fence with his small hands and shook it as hard as he could, but still it was there and his home unreachable.

Nael Zeid, Raed's father, said that discovering the fence left a psychological impact on his child. He has lost concentration in class, and fear crosses his face when he sees armored vehicles and Israeli troops working on the fence. more..

Grave and Blatant Next Step: Israeli Military Order Calls Wall "Demarcation Line”!
Palestine Monitor/PENGON/Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign 10/13/2003
Throughout this week, villagers whose lands have been isolated by the Wall in the northern West Bank found an Israeli military order declaring that the lands isolated behind the Wall formed a “demarcation border” and prohibiting passage to these areas almost entirely. The orders, which constitute a grave and blatant next step in Israel’s illegal land grab, come at the same time that the United Nations postponed voting on a Security Council resolution regarding Israel’s Apartheid Wall.

The military order was issued on October 2nd, but villagers found it this week pinned under rocks on land west of the Wall—in the isolated/de facto annexed area where few Palestinians are able to reach. The order pertains to all communities along the Wall’s “first phase” path, from northern Jenin by Salem, where Wall construction began in June 2002, to the village Mas-ha in the Salfit district. An insufficient and inaccurate official Arabic translation by the Israeli military was attached to the original Hebrew order; the translation of the “demarcation boarder” as well as the following information came from the Arabic version. more..
