Reflections on the Great Palestinian Prison Hunger Strikes of 2012
Richard Falk, ZNet 5/16/2012
Ch Guevara was once asked what was at the root of his revolutionary commitment. His response, which we should all take some moments to reflect upon, it is about love. Reading the words of Khader Adnan (Open Letter to the People of the World) and Thaer Halahleh (Letter to my Daughter), or the comments of Hana Shalabis mother and sister, or Bilal Diabs father, led me to recall Gueveras illuminating comment. Only those with closed minds can read such words of devotion without feeling that the animating hunger of these Palestinians is for peace and justice, for love and dignity, and that their heroic strikes would have impossible without cherishing life and future freedom for the people of Palestine. The nature of extreme self-sacrifice, provided it is autonomous and nonviolent, is an inherently spiritual undertaking even when its external appearance is political. For Christians, and others moved to tears by the life of Jesus, the Crucifixion exemplifies this encounter between the political and the spiritual. We can only marvel at the duplicitous double standards of the media. Without the Internet and Al Jazeera the West, especially the United States, would have rendered invisible these challenges to Israeli abuses of human rights and international humanitarian law. Only the settlement of the strike, and to some extent fear of Palestinian unrest should one of these hunger strikes die while in detention, was deemed somewhat newsworthy by the Western press. As many have observed, the media treatment of the Chinese dissident, Chen Guangcheng, or the global attention given to the Isreael soldier held captive in Gaza, underscores the media victimization of the Palestinian struggle, and exposes the illegitimacy of an information regime that rests upon such a flagrant disregard for objectivity, taking refuge in ill-disguised double standards: magnifying Israeli grievances, disappearing Palestinian wrongs.

Prisoners and the wounded, crossing borders
Jamal Muqbel, Bitterlemons 5/14/2012
About four years ago, a friend of mine told me about a meeting between Israelis and Palestinians near the Dead Sea. I really did not want to get involved at all, but my friend said to me, "Just come with me and you do not have to talk or participate."
I consulted my wife. She also rejected the idea out of hand. "How can you meet with the Israelis and still be the nationalist you are?" she said. "This is not right for you!" But I convinced her I was going only out of curiosity.
The meeting was held in March 2008. It was brief, and a chance to share personal stories between the participants. I remember that my 11-year-old son Yazen asked me, "Baba, were you with the Jews that imprisoned you long ago? Are these the same Jews that shot you in the head?" I told him, "Yes."
He then asked, "Aren't you afraid to sit with them? Were they carrying weapons?" First, I should explain that we have often welcomed internationals into our home and it makes no difference to us what religion they are. But he meant something else. He was asking if these were our occupiers. Frankly, it was difficult and moving for me to answer my son. I tried to answer diplomatically, but he was not convinced.
After that I decided to attend another event, a two-week dialogue in Bosnia. In my heart I could not shake the feeling that I was dealing with the enemy of the Palestinian people. The whole time I felt remorse. It was an incredible experience for me--like venturing into a jungle when I did not know the path and its destination. When I returned from Bosnia and talked about the activity, I was surprised to find how extensively the very act of meeting with Israelis met with objections. I found that I was being "boycotted" and, as a result, I lost many social relationships and clients. Just last week, there was another slap in the face when I lost the chance to be considered as a representative of the Beit Umar municipal council. My nomination was rejected because of my relationship with Israelis.

IAEA refuses Iran cooperation pact
Gareth Porter, Asia Times 5/14/2012
WASHINGTON - Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano has signaled that there will be no agreement with Iran in meetings in Vienna on Monday and Tuesday on the terms for Iranian cooperation in clarifying the issue of alleged nuclear weapons work.
Amano indicated in an interview with The Daily Beast on Friday that he intended to hold up an agreement on Iranian cooperation in responding to allegations of military involvement in its nuclear program until the IAEA was allowed to visit to Parchin, the military complex about 30 kilometers southeast of Tehran.
Amano told journalist Michael Adler the "standoff" over access to Parchin "has become like a symbol" and vowed to "pursue this objective until there's a concrete result".
Adler cited an "informed source" as saying that the IAEA rejected any linkage between a visit to Parchin and the rest of the plan for cooperation being negotiated, and insists that a visit to Parchin must come first before any agreement.
But the actual draft negotiating text of the agreement on "Clarification of Unresolved Issues" with Iran's proposed changes from the original IAEA proposal, which has been posted on the website of the Washington-based Arms Control Association, shows that the major conflict over their cooperation was whether the process had a definite endpoint, not access to Parchin.
Iran's permanent representative to the IAEA, ambassador Ali Asghar Soltanieh, has said that Iran was willing to grant access to Parchin, but only under an agreed plan for Iranian cooperation with the IAEA.

Toronto rally on the 64th anniversary of the Nakba
In Gaza: 16 May 2012 - SEE ALSO : Top 10 Facts You Probably Didn’t Know About the #Nakba Khalil Sakakini Cultural Center – Nakba Tribute Deir Yassin Remembered Palestinian Refugees’ Migration Routes During Nakba In 1948 unending Nakbas Demonstrators also rejoiced in the news of the recent victory of Palestinian political prisoners , 2000 of whom maintained a month long hunger strike, another 7 of whom maintained hunger strikes of from 54 to 77 days. While Palestinians have long-used tactics of non-violent resistance, in tandem with legitimate armed resistance to the occupation of Palestinian land, this recent victory brought the issue of Palestinian political prisoners to the news, particularly highlighting the Zionist Israeli military’s  illegal and immoral use of  “administrative detention” to hold Palestinians for indefinite numbers of months, years, without charging them or giving them fair trial. Particularly important among the victories gained are the restoration of families’ visitation rights–families from Gaza have been denied access...more

Erasing the Nakba
Palestine Chronicle: 16 May 2012 - By Neve Gordon I first heard about the Nakba in the late 1980s, while I was an undergraduate student of philosophy at Hebrew University. This, I believe, is a revealing fact, particularly since, as a teenager, I was a member of Peace Now and was raised in a liberal home. I grew up in the southern city of Be'er-Sheva, which is just a few kilometres from several unrecognised Bedouin villages that, today, are home to thousands of residents who were displaced in 1948. I now know that the vast majority of the Negev's Bedouin population was not as lucky, and that, in the late 1940s and early 1950s, most Bedouin either fled or were expelled from their ancestral lands to Jordan or Gaza. How is it possible that a left-leaning Israeli teenager who was living in the Negev during the early 1980s (I graduated from high-school in 1983) had never...more

Europe's Southern Mediterranean Priorities
Palestine Chronicle: 16 May 2012 - By Stuart Reigeluth Last month the European Parliament postponed the vote at the Committees on Foreign Affairs and International Trade on whether or not to enhance trade relations even further with Israel. This is good news for now is the time for the EU to focus on other southern Mediterranean partners. Since the winter of 2010/11, momentum towards democratic representation has been growing and spreading steadily across North Africa and West Asia. Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya have experienced different levels of regime change with varying degrees of violence and turmoil. The monarchies of Morocco and Jordan have remained in power with constitutional amendments which may seem superficial but they are positive steps towards greater democratic constitutional rights and political plurality – comparable at some level to Spain in the 1970s, though much slower. Syria is sadly holding on to power by using the most repressive means yet: over 10,000 civilians...more

Peace-making without Mediators
Palestine Chronicle: 16 May 2012 - By Nicola Nasser A surplus of mediators have been around all the time, including the heavy weight Quartet of the UN, U.S., EU and Russia, as well as heaps of terms of reference of UNSC resolutions, bilateral signed accords and 'roadmaps,' in addition to marathon bilateral talks that have left no stone unearthed, international as well as regional conferences were never on demand to facilitate the 'peace process,' which has been lavishly financed to keep moving. However the Palestinian – Israeli peace-making is still elusive as ever as Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot” has been, without a glimpse of light at the end of the endless tunnel of Israeli military occupation of Palestinian territory and people. Palestinian – Israeli peace-making has been for all practical reasons on hold since 2000, and bilateral peace contacts have been dormant since Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu came to power in 2009 except for a...more

Israel Must be Forced to Implement Prisoner Agreement
Palestine Chronicle: 16 May 2012 - By Julie Webb-Pullman - Gaza Despite repeatedly stating that a key demand was an end to administrative detention, and that no partial offer would be accepted, an Israeli offer was yesterday accepted by the Higher Committee for the Hunger Strikers on behalf of the prisoners. Although Israel has agreed to release 19 prisoners from solitary confinement – several of whom have been in isolation for more than ten years – and to lift the ban on family visits for prisoners from Gaza, the agreement states only that administrative detention will not be ‘renewed’ automatically and that after six months, the prisoner must be released, or charged. Current administrative detainees will be released, or charged, at the end of their current sentence. This is a far cry from the ban prisoners were demanding. Palestinians can still be ‘administratively detained’ for at least six months. Current prisoners will not be immediately released,...more

The Palestinian Nakba: The Resolve of Memory
Dissident Voice: 16 May 2012 - Many Palestinians remember and reference al-Nakba, also known as the Catastrophe, on May 15 every year. The event marks the expulsion of nearly a million Palestinians, while their villages were destroyed. The destruction of Palestine in 1947-48 ushered in the birth of Israel. Older generations relay the harsh and oppressive memory of their collective experience to younger Palestinians, many of whom live their own Nakbas today. In covering al-Nakba, sympathetic Arab and other media play sad music and show black and white footage of displaced, frightened refugees. They rightly emphasize the concept of Sumud, steadfastness, as they show Palestinian of all ages holding unto the rusty keys of their homes and insisting on their right of return. Other, less sympathetic media discuss al-Nakba, if at all, as a side note – a nuisance in the Israeli narrative of a nation’s supposedly miraculous birth and its progression to an idyllic oasis...more
